  4. Kalamazoo Promise versus charter schools/vouchers: Which is the better philanthropic model for education?

In kalamazoo students are recieving vouchers to attend private or chartes schools. The money does not come from taxes or the government, but its donated by local business' and people. The question in the article is; are vouchers necessary and why dont local governments invest more in public schooling.
I think that as long as the government is not having to raise taxes to give out these vouchers then by all means I am okay with it. If people in the local area want to donate money to send these kids to school in more advanced or private schools it may be able to help the kids achieve more.

  5. South Christian High teacher pleads guilty to having sex with student

James Bruce Valkema was a teacher at South Christian High School for ten years teaching spanish and coaching the bowling team. He pleaded guilty to having sex with a 15 year old girl several times. He even took her to the pharmacy to get birth control..like a weirdo. Apparantly this girl stayed the night at his house ten times or more on Friday and Saturday nights during the school year and then it became more frequent during the summer, but her dad said that she never spent ten nights away from home "unsupervised" which I personally think is a load of crap because when I was fifteen I was staying the night at my friends' houses every night and my mom never knew where I was. Anywayyyyyyyys, this creeper is going to get 6-12 years in prision even though it should have been like 10-20 but he just admitted to it so he got the minimum sentence.

  6. Are minority students disciplined more harshly? Obama administation to issue suspension guidelines.

The Obama administration feels that students of minority groups are punished more harshly than those of non-minorty students. I feel that this is untrue, and it is the minority groups that get in trouble most often because of thier behavior.

  7. Detroit seeking out students who missed class

My opinion: I think that if administraters go from door to door student attendance will improve. If parents know that their children are not attending school then maybe something at home will change and students will be more apt to go to school. Which, in turn would help get more funding for the school if the student attendence numbers go up.

Attendance agents are going door-to-door in search of Detroit students who have not made it to class. the low attendance of school by students contributes to the low funding the Detroit school system receives.

  10. This is whack :)...but anyways Attendence agents are going door to door in search of students who have not made it to class. The district is going to talk to the students parents to see why they have not attended school. They need the students to show up because they need all the money they can get for the students because since 1997 Detroit has lost 100,000 students

  12. Are minority students disciplined more harshly? Obama administation to issue suspension guidelines.

This report focuses on the suspension treatment between whites and minorities (mostly blacks) in High Schools. It mentions things such as, the “zero-tolerance” policies of school districts and the “harsh”-ness of the punishments. Even President Barack Obama’s administration has been brought into this deal, agreeing that minorities do receive harsher punishments, they hope to make this topic a high priority.

  13. Does single parenthood hurt a child's chances of school success?

After reading this article, i think that living in a house with both parents present does not increase acadmic success. However, it can instill better discpline which can then translate into the classroom.

Students at Grand Rapids planted a garden on school grounds. But thats not all they're doing. They plan to turn the roof of their school into a park, and to add a large running area around the school. PERSONALLY, i think this is a great idea. sounds like something i would do. (:

This article is about whether or not single parenthood hurts a child's education. It's been proven that it's actually poverty that can hurt a child's education and not whether a child has both parents or just one.

GVSU is thinking of spending $40 million dollars to help the downtown area grow witht the addition of a new school. GVSU just began a campaign to try and earn a total of $5 million dollars. James Williams says, "With the state of the economy, it's critical that we can create a facility that can produce quality students that can lead this state back to recovery." They have decided that they want nothing but the best and are working to succeed.

    http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2010/10/are_minority_students_discipli.html

Children of color or different race are getting harsher punishments than white children. The Obama ministration is going to set up a program to teach teachers how to deal with troubled students.

I think it is ridiculous. I believe that you get punished for what you did and the teachers don't go easy on white students.

    http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2010/10/are_minority_students_discipli.html

The Obama administration thinks that minority students are disiplined more harsely than non- minoirty students, so they have decided to issue guidelines for school districs on how they should handle disipline in their schools.

Personaly, I feel that these guidlines are quite benifital towards keeping an equal level of disipline for everyone, and minoritys cannot say that they are being treated differntly anymore.

  21. Title: Obama presses for longer school years.

    Link: http://www.mlive.com/news/us-world/index.ssf/2010/09/obama_presses_for_longer_schoo.html

    Summary and opinion:
President Barack Obama is thinking of making the school year longer. He wants to do this because the U.S. school system is falling short of it's foreign counterparts especially in science and math.
I think that this may be necessary although the students who want to learn already do and move forward with the time that is given to them. A lot of students may not like this especially those who go to school and maintain their grade just to perform in sports.

    Summary and opinion:
The Obama administration believers that minority students are being disciplined harsher than white students for the same type of infraction caused. I think that the schools do not mean to always discipline the minorities more. I believe that the problem is that most of the problems caused are by minorities, but i do belive that sometimes the school goes a little to far with minority discipline even for the same problem caused by a white student.

  23. Detroit seeking out students who missed class.

    http://www.mlive.com/news/detroit/index.ssf/2010/10/detroit_seeking_out_students_w.html

Detroit attendance agents are going door to door in search of students who have not made it to class. The district says that agents will go and speak to the parents of students who missed count day on Monday. The district is being so strict about attendance because they need their students to be their the whole time so that they can receive money from the state to help fund these poor schools. Detroit has lost over 100,000 students since 1997. I believe that they are taking the right steps toward getting these kids in school full time.

  24. The title of the article is "MEAP tests scaled back for some students, but schools still ramping up efforts to encourage good scores" and the link is http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2010/10/meap_tests_scaled_back_for_som.html

My opinion on the article is that the MEAP scores will gradually increase and decrease all the time. Also that to help kids with the MEAP scores schools should not test the kids at the beginning of the year but at the end of the year so that they all know the stuff that is actually on the test.

  25. Bay City schools bringing more free breakfasts into elementary school classrooms

So, this Bay City place is pretty much giving more kids free breakfasts now. For this I have two separate views: On one hand, free breakfast for growing children who need it to concentrate in school. On the other hand, less money coming in to fund the school.
Other than for fiscal consequences, I think this is a great idea.

i feel that colleges should allow offer four-year bachelor's degrees because education is important and it will help people have a better future

    http://www.mlive.com/opinion/kalamazoo/index.ssf/2010/10/column_does_single_parenthood.html

I think that living a two parent household does not increase a students chance of succeeding in school. Parents who support their children are the ones whose kids will succeed in school. A household can still be stable, even if there is only one parent present.

Michigan is thinking about building a new constitution.

Michiganders are figuring out if they should have a constitutional convention and itt would mean tearing apart the constitution that took effect in 1963. People have thought that the cultural differences have changed and that we should make a new constitution.
I think that it could be a good idea and that it would be good to make changes!

  29. Google or Microsoft? University of Michigan will pick one

The University of Michigan is deciding whether to adopt digital tools offered by Google or Microsoft. Officials from both Microsoft and Google are visiting the university, in hopes of persuading the university to use their programs.
I think this is a great opportunity for both sides. The University of Michigan will be able to receive the best programs available, while either Google or Microsoft, whichever is chosen by the school, gains publicity and a little bit of money along the way.

  30. MEAP being scaled back for some students.

is the state serious? were going to scale back the test and make it easier? while most of the other countries in the world are doing a lot better and even states like new york are making their tests harder and in a more competitive economy this is unexceptable. is this going to make us look better or just incase teachers pay becomes what their students test in national and state tests. just one question state, why is making everything easier in one of the worst states for testing scores and in one of the dumbeest countries inthe world?

  31. GVSU to host candlelight vigil to highlight issues faced by gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students

This article is about GVSU having a candlelight for students who are gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender. I agree with this article and I think what they are doing is, as the board of director said, "awesome!" I think it's great that GVSU is having this candelelight because there have been some people greatly ridiculed for being gay and even commit suicide because so many people tease them and make them think that they are worthless and that there is something wrong with them. In this article I was very moved, like haas, the board director at GVSU when hearing of the recent suicide of a Rutgers University freshman. Two students were charged with using a webcam to secretly capture and transmit the student's sexual encounter with another man in his dorm room. Hearing that made me sick. I really do not understand why people find pleasure in making fun of other people. "harassment is not a prank and is never funny." (Haas.) I have been made fun of also, (not for being gay or anything, but still) and it never feels good and I think having a candlelight will really help some people who are "struggling" with their sexual orientation or people who ridicule them for their choices.

    http://www.mlive.com/news/detroit/index.ssf/2010/10/dearborn_schools_settle_with_c.html

The wrestling coach for Dearborne High School, Gerald Marszalek, was on a team trip outside of school with the team when two boys of Muslim religion asked about his religion, which was Christianity, and he told them about it. The school, which was primarily of Muslim belief, was angry with the fact that he was expressing his Christianity to their Muslim students. After 35 years of employment, Marszalek's contract was not renewed. He was planning to coach one more season and then retire.

I don't think that what the school did was right. They try to cover it up with fancy words and stretched contract basics and whatnot, but it is clear that they were discriminating against Mr. Marszlek for his religion. He was right to bring the courts in to the situation to defend his rights as an American citizen.
